Vietnam Women's Volleyball Squad Crisis Ahead of Asiad 20: Coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet's Headache in Finding Replacements

With less than two months to go until the 20th Asian Games (Asiad 20) in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, the Vietnam women's volleyball national team is facing a severe personnel crisis in the outside hitter position. After the 2026 Asian Championship held in China with multiple losses, head coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet has only three outside hitters left, including two young talents aged 17 and 18. The problem of finding replacements for injured key players has become more urgent than ever. At the recently concluded 2026 Asian Championship, the Vietnamese team had to compete with a depleted squad, missing two important outside hitters: Vi Thi Nhu Quynh (health issues) and Nguyen Thi Uyen (serious injury during the tournament). According to the coaching staff, Uyen suffered a severe knee injury that prevented her from continuing. Nhu Quynh, although not a primary receiver, has the ability to share the attacking load with Tran Thi Thanh Thuy, helping to relieve the scoring pressure on the captain. With both absent, Coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet has only three outside hitters available: Tran Thi Thanh Thuy (29 years old, top-class in Southeast Asia), Pham Quynh Huong (18), and Bui Thi Anh Thao (17). Both young players are attending a continental-level tournament for the first time and lack international experience. The age and experience gap compared to opponents like China, Japan, and Thailand (who typically field outside hitters aged 22-28) is huge and difficult to compensate for tactically. Asiad 20 allows each team to register only 12 players, two fewer than the Asian Championship (14 players). This forces Coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet to cut one position from an already thin squad. Nguyen Thi Phuong and Pham Thi Nguyet Anh occasionally have impressive matches but lack the consistency needed at the continental level. Hoang Hong Hanh and Tran Tu Linh are still young and have had few international exposure opportunities. Do Lai Yen Nhi has the advantage of physique but has not been tested in major tournaments. Tactically, the absence of Uyen and Nhu Quynh makes Vietnam's reception system fragile. At the Asian Championship, strong opponents frequently exploited this weakness with powerful serves (jump-float, jump-serve) to disrupt the game. If the two young outside hitters have to handle reception duties, the perfect-pass rate will drop, forcing the team to attack in out-of-system situations. Vietnam's characteristic fast, varied play will lose its power. One feasible solution is for Coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet to adjust tactics toward a defense-counterattack approach, prioritizing blocking and digging over organized offense. This means reducing overall attacking power but could help the team hold up against strong offensive opponents. However, this is a compromise with a low ceiling and cannot help Vietnam compete fairly with the powerhouses. The pressure of FIVB world ranking points is also an important factor. Every match at Asiad 20 brings ranking points, directly affecting opportunities to qualify for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. A poor result in Japan will cause Vietnam's ranking to drop, creating difficulties for later qualification rounds. Nevertheless, experts believe Coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet still has time to make a decision. He needs to carefully weigh experience versus potential, stability versus adaptability. Choosing the right person can help the team overcome the crisis, but if wrong, Asiad 20 could become a forgettable games for Vietnam women's volleyball.
